Bayside Grooming Original Clay Review

Today, we have a homebrewer called Bayside Grooming Co, originates from the Southern Hemisphere, with beautiful bays and beaches – Newcastle, Australia. We are glad to have connected with them and they were generous to share with us both of their products – the Bayside Grooming Original Clay and the latest one the Water Based Pomade. Bayside Grooming was inspired to produce a grooming product that is both ethical through the selection of ingredients and also giving back to the community. All ingredients are sourced locally in Australia and are vegan friendly and cruelty-free. Similar to Arcadian, Odoud’s, and the Flagship Pomade folks, I am always excited to see and test the work of homebrewers because of their unique formulas. In this review, we will be focusing on Original Clay.

Design and Packaging

From the the first look at it, you can tell it looks very chill, as if you were at some beach in Hawaii. The usage of very light colours with the ocean wave as its logo, you would expect this is a very light and easy to use product. The clay is stored in a lightweight plastic jar, with easy to read labeling, from mentioning of the ingredients used, how to use, to the intent of this product – strong hold, volume, course texture and matte.

It weighs at 96g. So gentlemen, please feel free hand carry them on your flights.

Scent

The scent is very light, on the sweeter side. If you were to ask me, it really reminds me the smell of this toothpaste called Kodomo Lion. I know this sounds like applying toothpaste on your hair, but honestly, it couldn’t be better. The scent is very refreshing, not over powering or over masculine. I would imagine using this during my weekend beach outing.

On their site, the scent has the notes of lime, coconut, bay leaf, patchouli, cedar, pine needle

I would say this is one of the better scents among the my personal favourites: Morris motleys’s Treatment Styling Balm, The Apothecary Malaysia’s Analogue Paste and Byrd’s Matte Paste.

Texture of Bayside Grooming original clay

This product really reminds of Morris Motley’s Treatment Styling Balm (TSB). It is easy to scoop out and not greasy at all. As compared to other types of clay like Kevin Murphy’s Rough Rider or Shehvoo’s Ocean Clay, the Original Clay has a much softer texture.

Though the TSB is still softer overall, this Original Clay is still very much a lightweight product.

Application

Since this is a clay based product, it is advisable to apply over blow-dry hair. Applying throughout the hair was fairly easy. It does dry up a little that caused some tug during the process. So, if you are hair is dry or coarse type, it’s advisable to use some hair spray (eg: Shehvoo’s Sea Salt Spray) to moisturize a little to prevent the the tug. It’s not a big of a deal for normal or fine hair types.

Restyling

Throughout the day, surprisingly, while restyling it was really easy. Don’t feel any tug to it and I am able to restyle either using my fingers or comb. There’s no need of any water required for restyling.

Shine

0 Shine – Matte

Volume

Works superbly especially during the first half of the day. Some restyling required afterwards.
