Hongkonghomebrew Styling Clay Review

Super excited to get our hands on Hongkonghomebrew second product – The Styling Clay. After our review on the Styling Balm, we were even curious how unorthodox their clay would be. Well, let’s not waste any time dive right into it

Design and Packaging

Totally the same as to the Styling Balm packaging. Clean and Simplistic. Housed in a white plastic jar, it has the right amount of information with the mentioned of Ingredients and application. There’s a mention that the product free from elements that might be a little dangerous (if over used) such as paraben, petrolatum, EDTA..etc. Plus it’s cruelty free!

Very lightweight, and they kind of gives you a glimpse this might be a lightweight product. It weighs at around 85g (3oz). And that, you can carry them with you while traveling on a plane.

Scent

Again no difference with the Styling Balm. Lemongrass-Like. It comes from an Chinese Herb plant called Litsea cubeba. Known to provide reliefs for anxiety, fear, fatigue, pain or stress. The scent is really soothing and provides a sense of calmness. Not to overpowering, just the right amount. I would say this a job well done! (not unless you dislike lemon grass scent)

Texture

We were very surprised to find out that the texture is superbly soft and smooth. Unlike your typical hair clay product which are harder in texture and stickier, this Styling Clay is very lightweight, to the extend it fills like there’s some a slight foamy texture (air bubbles like) but you can’t really see them, only through touch. There’s no other clay we can compare with this product.

Application

I have tried both on dry and damp hair. I would say styling some of the Styling Clay as a pre-styler on a damp hair and blow dry them before adding a little more will give you the best hold and endurance. Scooping it out from the jar is very easy. When apply on damp hair it’s pretty smooth because of the wetness. If you style it on dry hair, you might experience some tucking.

Alternatively, I also use the Pre Styling Spray as my pre-styler, blow dry then apply the Styling Clay. It gives you almost the same result, but I would say the former one has a much strong hold! .

Restyling

Restyling with finger can be done, but you might not even need to restyle if you stay most of the time indoors (offices).

Shine

Matte – No Shine

Volume

I would say it does gives a pretty impressive volume when style with comb and blow dry.
